Recognized under Tier 8 — Robotics, Aethon is a Pittsburgh-based developer of the TUG autonomous mobile robot, a platform that has operated in hospitals since 2004 and now completes more than five million deliveries annually, moving medications, lab specimens, meals, and linens through facilities while independently operating elevators and doors. The company, part of ST Engineering, has continued developing its platform in 2026, including testing an omnidirectional base with four independently steerable wheels for tighter maneuvering in constrained spaces. TUG's core capability — autonomous, unsupervised movement of supplies and materials through structured indoor environments without dedicated human logistics staff — maps directly onto the internal cargo and consumables handling a pressurized lunar or Mars habitat will require, where every person freed from routine transport tasks is a person available for higher-value work.
