Amazon Project Kuiper
Broadband LEO constellation; potential interplanetary relay layer
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 7 — Interplanetary Communications, Amazon's Project Kuiper — rebranded Amazon Leo in 2025 — is a low Earth orbit broadband constellation that had launched more than 390 production satellites across 19 missions by mid-2026, with an approved buildout of 3,236 first-generation satellites and a further 4,500-satellite second-generation expansion bringing its planned total to 7,727. The company has requested an extension from the FCC on its original 1,600-satellite deployment deadline, citing an expected 700 satellites in orbit by July 2026. Kuiper's architecture, like competing LEO systems, increasingly relies on optical inter-satellite links to move data without ground relay stations. While Kuiper's stated purpose is terrestrial broadband, the same mesh-networking and laser-crosslink infrastructure is the kind of layer analysts point to as a potential building block for future interplanetary relay networks, extending Earth-based connectivity architecture toward the communications demands of lunar and Mars operations.
