Believer Meats

Recognized under Tier 6 — Food Systems, Believer Meats (formerly Future Meat Technologies) was an Israeli-founded cultivated-meat company that built a 200,000-square-foot production facility in Wilson, North Carolina, designed to produce roughly 10,000–12,000 tonnes of cultivated chicken annually. The company cleared both FDA and USDA review in 2025, becoming the first foreign cultivated-meat producer approved for sale in the United States, after raising more than $390 million in cumulative funding. Despite these regulatory milestones, Believer Meats ceased operations in December 2025 amid a cash shortfall and an unpaid construction-debt dispute tied to its North Carolina plant. Its trajectory illustrates both the technical feasibility and the capital intensity of scaling cultivated protein to industrial volumes — a tension directly relevant to any future colony food strategy, where cultivated meat's promise of resource-efficient, livestock-free protein must be weighed against the cost of building production capacity from scratch.
