BioServe (Crop Science)
Crop growth research and food production studies on ISS
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 6 — Food Systems, BioServe Space Technologies is a research center within the University of Colorado Boulder's Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences department that has designed, built, and flown life-science and plant-growth hardware on more than 110 spaceflight missions since 1987. Its crop-science work includes flight habitat subsystems for water and nutrient delivery, lighting, gas exchange, and humidity control developed to support plant-growth investigations aboard the ISS. In August 2026, BioServe announced it had reserved research space on Starlab, the commercial space station under development, to continue flying its SABL incubator hardware as the ISS nears retirement. BioServe's decades of flight-proven crop and life-support hardware provide the empirical baseline for growing food reliably in microgravity, data directly transferable to designing crop-production systems for lunar and Martian habitats.
