BioServe Space Technologies
Space life sciences and crew health countermeasures research
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support Systems, BioServe Space Technologies is a research center within the University of Colorado Boulder's Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences that has designed, built, and flown microgravity life science hardware and experiments on more than 60 spaceflight missions. Its BioCell hardware has supported investigations such as Cardinal Heart 2.0, which tests candidate drugs for protecting cardiac cell function in microgravity, alongside studies of bone density loss and immune system dysregulation in spaceflight — two of the best-documented physiological risks of long-duration missions. Rather than building life support hardware itself, BioServe generates the physiological data and countermeasure research that life support and medical systems designers depend on. Understanding and mitigating bone loss, cardiovascular deconditioning, and immune suppression is essential to keeping a crew functional across a multi-year Mars transit and surface stay, not just alive.
