BioServe Space Technologies

Crew health countermeasures and ISS biomedical research

Accomplishments

Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, BioServe Space Technologies is a research center at the University of Colorado Boulder that has designed and flown spaceflight-certified biomedical hardware for more than 34 years. In May 2025 the group marked its 100th mission to the International Space Station, having by then supported more than 110 orbital investigations spanning mammalian cell and tissue culture, organoids, bioreactors, and organ-on-chip systems. Its Space Automated Bioproduct Laboratory (SABL) incubators, which regulate temperature from -5°C to +43°C and control CO2, have become standard hardware for ISS life-science payloads, and BioServe has since reserved incubator slots aboard the commercial Starlab platform. That decades-long track record of reliably running biological experiments in orbit is the kind of operational groundwork that future Moon and Mars missions will depend on to understand and counteract the physiological toll of long-duration spaceflight on crew health.
