Boston Dynamics
Legged robots adaptable for uneven planetary terrain
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 8 — Robotics, Boston Dynamics is a Massachusetts-based robotics developer best known for its legged platforms, including the quadrupedal Spot robot and the humanoid Atlas. At CES 2026, the company unveiled a redesigned, fully electric fifth-generation Atlas built with Hyundai, which is constructing a factory targeting production of up to 30,000 units annually; Boston Dynamics stated its entire 2026 production run was already committed. The new Atlas can lift 110 pounds briefly, reach up to 7.5 feet, and operate across a temperature range of minus 4 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Legged locomotion capable of handling uneven, unimproved ground and wide thermal swings is directly relevant to planetary surfaces, where regolith, rock fields, and slopes rule out the paved, wheel-friendly infrastructure that terrestrial robots typically rely on.
