ClearSpace

Debris capture robots; ESA ClearSpace-1 prime contractor

Accomplishments

Recognized under Tier 8 — Robotics, ClearSpace is a Swiss in-orbit servicing company and prime contractor for ESA's ClearSpace-1 mission, the agency's first purchased active-debris-removal service. The mission's chaser spacecraft uses a four-arm robotic capture mechanism to rendezvous with, grapple, and deorbit an uncooperative target; after a 2023 debris strike damaged the original target adapter, ESA reassigned the mission to the derelict PROBA-1 satellite. ClearSpace-1 completed key environmental testing in 2026 and holds a launch contract with Arianespace for a Vega C flight, though some reporting places the actual launch as late as 2028. The capture and rendezvous hardware ClearSpace is developing addresses the same problem a Mars-bound infrastructure network will face: retiring or servicing spent stages and derelict hardware to keep the orbital lanes that future colonists depend on clear and usable.
