Regolith 3D printing for lunar/Mars surface habitats
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 2 — In-Situ Resource Utilization, ICON is a Texas-based construction technology company developing large-format 3D printing systems for off-world infrastructure. Under a NASA contract to advance the Lunar Surface Construction System, ICON and NASA have been developing a laser-based printer designed to sinter lunar regolith directly into structures without water, which sublimates in vacuum. In February 2025, the company flew its Duneflow experiment aboard a Blue Origin New Shepard suborbital flight under NASA's Flight Opportunities program to test regolith-printing behavior outside Earth's atmosphere. ICON previously built Mars Dune Alpha, the 3D-printed habitat NASA used for its yearlong CHAPEA Mars surface simulations. By working toward printers that turn loose regolith into landing pads, roads, and habitat shells, ICON is addressing one of the core prerequisites for sustained Moon and Mars settlement: building shelter from what is already on-site rather than what has to be launched from Earth.
