ILC Dover (Suits)
EVA spacesuit soft-goods and pressure vessel systems
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support Systems, the Astrospace division of ILC Dover has designed and manufactured the pressure garment — the soft-goods "suit" itself — for every NASA EVA spacesuit for more than fifty years, from the Apollo A7L through the Shuttle- and ISS-era EMU, accumulating more than 3,000 hours of spacewalk use without a garment failure. ILC Dover contributed pressure-garment work to the Collins Aerospace-led team for NASA's next-generation ISS spacesuit before Collins withdrew from that contract in 2024, and in April 2023 the company formed a long-term strategic partnership with Sierra Space to develop next-generation EVA and IVA suits built on its Astro soft-goods architecture. A pressure garment is, functionally, a single-occupant closed life support envelope; ILC Dover's soft-goods expertise in flexibility, micrometeoroid protection, and pressure retention is directly transferable to the surface EVA suits astronauts will depend on for extended excursions on the Moon and Mars.
