Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, LambdaVision is a University of Connecticut spinout developing a protein-based artificial retina manufactured through a layer-by-layer process that performs better in microgravity than on Earth. Working with Space Tango, the company has flown nine investigations to the ISS, refining an automated, CubeLab-housed production system whose output showed markedly improved uniformity, optical performance, and biocompatibility compared to Earth-manufactured equivalents. LambdaVision holds a NASA Phase 2 In-Space Production Applications (InSPA) award to advance its manufacturing process toward commercial low-Earth-orbit production, and has signed an agreement with Vast to continue that work aboard Vast's planned commercial space stations. LambdaVision's track record demonstrates a broader principle relevant to Mars colonization: some biomedical products, including implant technology a Mars-bound crew might eventually need, may only be manufacturable at commercial quality in microgravity, making in-space biomanufacturing infrastructure a genuine medical capability rather than a novelty.
