Lunar Medical
Remote diagnostics and surgical systems for lunar surface
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, Lunar Medical is a small company developing autonomous medical decision-support systems for crews operating far from Earth-based physicians, building on NASA- and Canadian Space Agency-funded research into telemedicine and psychological stress in remote environments such as Antarctic winter-over stations. Its flagship program is the Autonomous Care Management System (ACMS), intended to support diagnosis and treatment decisions for long-duration lunar and Mars crews with limited or delayed contact with Earth-based physicians. A related system, C2M2, applies artificial intelligence to diagnostic and treatment decision-making and was delivered to the Canadian Space Agency's headquarters in St. Hubert, Quebec, for demonstration in late 2023, and the company has received funding to develop SIMAT, an AI system for medical assessment and treatment. Communication delay is one of the defining medical constraints of a Mars mission, and Lunar Medical's work targets exactly that problem: enabling a crew to diagnose and treat itself when a live consult with Earth is not an option.
