Lunar Resources

Lunar water-ice and regolith extraction for propellant

Accomplishments

Recognized under Tier 2 — In-Situ Resource Utilization, Lunar Resources is a Houston-based industrial technology company developing electrochemical processes, including molten regolith electrolysis, to extract oxygen, aluminum, iron, silicon, and magnesium from lunar regolith. NASA awarded the company a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts grant in 2023 to study a pipeline for moving lunar-extracted oxygen across the surface, and it has worked with NASA's Kennedy Space Center Swamp Works and, separately, Sierra Space on reactor and solar-concentrator testing. Industry assessments in 2026 have generally described oxygen and metal extraction from dry regolith as nearing a credible flight-demonstration stage, in contrast to polar water-ice extraction, which remains at an earlier, prospecting-limited stage across the sector. Lunar Resources' focus on the dry-regolith pathway positions it toward the more mature end of lunar ISRU, converting the Moon's most abundant raw material into oxygen and construction metal rather than waiting on unresolved water-ice questions.
