Motiv Space Systems
Robotic arms for planetary rovers; Mars Perseverance arm supplier
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 8 — Robotics, Motiv Space Systems is a Pasadena-based space robotics firm best known for building the robotic arm on NASA's Perseverance rover — a five-jointed, roughly two-meter arm with a science payload capacity of more than 45 kilograms — along with the zoom, focus, and filter-wheel mechanisms for the rover's Mastcam-Z imaging system. In May 2026, Rocket Lab completed its acquisition of Motiv, folding the company's Mars-flight-proven hardware into a new Rocket Lab Robotics division. Motiv's arms and precision mechanisms represent flight-validated technology for manipulating tools, collecting samples, and positioning instruments on a planetary surface without direct human hands. That capability — proven on Mars rather than merely proposed for it — is a direct precursor to the robotic maintenance, sample handling, and construction support that any sustained Mars surface presence will require before crews can safely rely on it.
