Nanoracks
ISS science and life support research platform
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support Systems, Nanoracks (now part of Voyager Technologies) has flown more than 1,300 commercial research and technology payloads from over 30 nations to the International Space Station, building the commercial hardware and logistics pipeline — including the Bishop Airlock, the first commercial airlock added to the ISS — that underpins much of the station's non-NASA research activity. Nanoracks, Voyager, and Lockheed Martin were awarded a $160 million NASA funded Space Act Agreement to design the Starlab commercial space station, a continuously crewed successor platform targeting launch around 2027 with a large inflatable habitat and dedicated science and manufacturing laboratory space. This transition from a payload-hosting service on an existing station to co-developing an independent, continuously crewed habitat mirrors the shift future Moon and Mars outposts require: moving research and life-sustaining infrastructure off Earth-dependent platforms and into self-sufficient, long-duration habitats.
