Advanced Plant Habitat; Veggie plant growth systems on ISS
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 6 — Food Systems, Redwire Space's Plants line manages NASA's Advanced Plant Habitat, a growth chamber operating aboard the ISS since 2018, and continues the legacy of the agency's Veggie system (flown from 2014) in supporting plant physiology research in orbit. The company is developing a privately owned commercial Greenhouse platform capable of growing plants from seed to maturity using flight-proven Passive Orbital Nutrient Delivery System modules and Veggie plant pillows, with an inaugural flight slated to grow strawberries in orbit. Redwire's plant-growth hardware also underpins LEAF (Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora), a payload set to fly on Artemis III to study how lunar-surface conditions affect crops. This work directly addresses one of colonization's hardest constraints: producing fresh food and testing crop viability off-Earth, without dependence on resupply, as missions extend from the Moon to Mars.
