Tempus Pro portable vital-signs monitor; ESA astronaut telemedicine device
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, Remote Diagnostic Technologies is a UK-based medical device company that developed the Tempus Pro, a portable vital-signs monitor with built-in satellite telemedicine capability, with funding and support from the European Space Agency's Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems programme. Since 2017, ESA medical teams have used the device to record and transmit astronaut vital signs immediately after Soyuz landings in Kazakhstan, beginning with Thomas Pesquet's return from the Proxima mission, sending encrypted patient data by secure satellite link to flight surgeons at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne. The device integrates a digital stethoscope, ECG leads, an ultrasound probe, and a video laryngoscope with GSM, GPS, and satellite connectivity in a single ruggedized unit. That combination of real-time remote diagnostics and secure long-distance data transmission is precisely the capability a Mars-bound crew will need when a live consultation with Earth-based physicians is delayed by minutes or impossible altogether.
