Saft (TotalEnergies)

Recognized under Tier 5 — Energy Production & Storage, Saft is the battery subsidiary of TotalEnergies and a longstanding supplier of lithium-ion cells for satellites, with roughly 380 spacecraft currently in orbit using its batteries. Saft's VL10ES cell, developed with support from the European Space Agency and the French space agency CNES, underpins a contract to supply more than 250 rechargeable batteries for MDA Space's AURORA satellite constellation program, the largest single contract in Saft's history of space battery supply. The company has also introduced the VL51ES, a newer-generation cell targeting higher energy density, and has previously supplied batteries for U.S. Air Force Space Command satellites under contract to Lockheed Martin. Flight-proven, high-density lithium-ion storage of the kind Saft builds is what lets a spacecraft or lander keep systems running through eclipse periods, the two-week lunar night, or the hours each Martian sol when solar panels alone cannot meet demand.
