Space Applications Services
Lunar ISRU technology demonstrations; ESA and NASA partner
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 2 — In-Situ Resource Utilization, Space Applications Services is a Belgian aerospace engineering firm, founded in 1987, that has become one of ESA's principal contractors for lunar resource-prospecting and ISRU demonstration work. The company leads development of the LUVMI-X lunar rover platform for prospecting water and other resources at the lunar poles, and has carried out multiple ESA studies, including the ALCHEMIST payload study and a terrestrial ISRU testbed for producing oxygen and water from regolith. ESA has awarded the company a contract to lead an international consortium designing a Ground-Based Pilot Plant intended to demonstrate oxygen and metal production from lunar regolith on Earth ahead of a flight version. The firm has also been named to provide lunar mobility and payload services for NASA's Intuitive Machines IM-6 mission in 2026. Its work sits upstream of extraction itself — proving where usable resources actually are before hardware is sent to mine them.
