Miniaturized ISS experiments; drug discovery in microgravity
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, SpacePharma is a Swiss-Israeli company, headquartered in Herzliya and founded in 2012 by Yossi Yamin, that builds miniaturized laboratory systems for running pharmaceutical and biological experiments in microgravity aboard the ISS and its own nanosatellites. In August 2025 its Zeprion-2 mission delivered microgravity-grown prion protein crystals to the ISS in partnership with Italian universities, part of the ESA-linked ZEPRION project studying microgravity-induced crystallization for drug discovery. In January 2026, SpacePharma R&D Israel was selected for a €2.18 million EIC Accelerator blended-finance award to build SPACTORY, described as the first in-orbit monoclonal antibody manufacturing line, using its mGnify lab-on-chip and microfluidics technology. As crewed missions move beyond low Earth orbit, this kind of compact, automated pharmaceutical production and analysis hardware is a candidate path toward manufacturing medicines on demand rather than relying on a finite stock carried from Earth.
