SpaceX Starlink
Mars relay network planned; largest LEO broadband constellation
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 7 — Interplanetary Communications, SpaceX Starlink is the largest satellite broadband constellation ever deployed, with roughly 10,000 active satellites in low Earth orbit as of early 2026 and over 11,600 launched to date. The constellation now routes a substantial share of its traffic over optical inter-satellite laser links rather than ground relays, technology SpaceX has said it will adapt for "Marslink," a proposed constellation in Martian orbit intended to relay data between Mars surface assets and Earth. SpaceX is among the companies, alongside Blue Origin and Lockheed Martin, that NASA has asked to pitch next-generation commercial relay services as it retires its aging Mars orbital relay fleet. Starlink's proven ability to mass-produce and operate laser-linked satellites at scale gives it a plausible path toward providing the continuous, high-bandwidth communications backbone a Mars colony would need for coordination with Earth, remote operations, and surface-to-surface data relay.
