Teledyne Brown Engineering
Life support integration for ISS and future habitat systems
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support Systems, Teledyne Brown Engineering provides mission operations, ground systems, and integration engineering supporting the International Space Station's life support and habitability systems out of Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville and Johnson Space Center in Houston. In September 2022 the company was awarded NASA's Marshall Operations, Systems, Services and Integration II (MOSSI II) contract, worth up to $596.5 million over eight years, covering mission preparation, crew and flight controller training, real-time spaceflight operations, and the ground infrastructure that keeps ISS systems — including life support — functioning and monitored around the clock. This operations-and-integration role is distinct from hardware manufacturing but is equally essential: sustaining a crew for years in a closed habitat depends as much on the ground teams who monitor, troubleshoot, and sequence life support operations as on the hardware itself, a discipline directly applicable to future lunar and Mars habitat operations.
