Terrestrial Energy
Integral Molten Salt Reactor; advanced compact fission power
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 5 — Energy Production & Storage, Terrestrial Energy is a Canadian nuclear technology company developing the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR), a compact modular fission design that combines the reactor core, coolant salt, and primary heat exchangers inside a single sealed, replaceable unit. In January 2026 the company executed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy for Project TETRA, a pilot-reactor initiative under the Advanced Reactor Pilot Program, and in April 2026 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission completed a safety evaluation of its accident-analysis methodology. Terrestrial Energy has also secured 77 acres at the Texas A&M-RELLIS campus for engineering and site-characterization work, with first commercial IMSR units targeted for the early 2030s. While Terrestrial Energy's near-term customers are terrestrial, the sealed, meltdown-resistant, load-following design of the IMSR is representative of the compact fission architectures Moon and Mars surface power systems will need for energy independent of sunlight.
