The Aerospace Corporation
Technical and policy advisory on space law and governance
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 10 — Martian Law & Finance, The Aerospace Corporation is a nonprofit federally funded research center that advises the U.S. government on space systems engineering, policy, and governance through two dedicated units: the Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies (CORDS), established in 1997 to model collision risk and reentry breakup, and the Center for Space Policy and Strategy (CSPS), which publishes unbiased research and strategic analysis for government decisionmakers. Aerospace also hosts the Space Governance Database, developed with the AIAA-affiliated Space Safety Institute, cataloguing global treaties, norms, and best practices covering flight safety, spectrum interference, situational awareness, and space traffic management. Its dual technical-and-policy mandate makes it one of the few organizations capable of translating orbital mechanics into enforceable regulation. As Moon and Mars missions push beyond existing treaty frameworks, the kind of applied governance research Aerospace produces will inform how traffic management, licensing, and liability rules get written for destinations no current treaty was designed to cover.
