Abhijit Biswas

Recognized under Tier 7 — Interplanetary Communications, Abhijit Biswas has played an instrumental role in advancing deep space optical communications technology at JPL. As a principal engineer on the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) project — which achieved the first demonstration of laser communications from beyond the Moon — Biswas helped establish that high-bandwidth optical links across interplanetary distances are operationally achievable, not merely theoretical. For a Mars colony, the ability to transmit large volumes of data reliably and rapidly back to Earth is essential to mission planning, crew safety, scientific return, and colonists' connection to home; Biswas's work is laying the infrastructure foundation that makes that possible.
