Cardiovascular deconditioning countermeasures for spaceflight
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support Systems, Alan Hargens conducts pioneering research on cardiovascular deconditioning and the physiological countermeasures essential for long-duration spaceflight and eventual planetary colonization at UC San Diego. Hargens's decades of work addressing one of the central health challenges of human space exploration — how the cardiovascular system adapts, and struggles to readapt, across changing gravity environments — has made lasting contributions to preparing humanity for the physiological demands of long-duration missions and, eventually, permanent settlement beyond Earth.
