Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 3 — Structural Habitats & Space Architecture, Christophe Lasseur has led the MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) project at the European Space Agency for many years. MELiSSA — a closed-loop biological system designed to recycle organic waste, water, CO2, and other inputs into food, oxygen, and clean water using microorganisms and plants — is one of the most ambitious and long-running closed-loop life support research programs in the world. Closing the biological loops of a Mars habitat so colonists are not dependent on resupply for basic consumables is one of the most technically demanding requirements of any permanent Mars settlement, and MELiSSA has been advancing that goal for decades under Lasseur's leadership.
