Cyprien Verseux

Cyanobacteria for food production and ISRU on Mars

Accomplishments

Recognized under Tier 6 — Food Production & Space Agriculture, Cyprien Verseux conducts highly original research on using cyanobacteria as a biological foundation for Mars life support and food production. Verseux's work at ZARM, University of Bremen, on growing cyanobacteria under Mars-like atmospheric conditions — including low pressure and high CO2 — and using them to fix nitrogen, produce oxygen, and serve as a feedstock for other organisms, opens a genuinely novel and low-resource pathway to biological life support on Mars. If cyanobacteria can thrive on a simplified Martian atmosphere with minimal Earth-supplied inputs, they could serve as the biological foundation of a far more self-sufficient Mars colony.
