David Klaus

Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support & Closed-Loop Systems, David Klaus has made outstanding contributions to bioastronautics and life support engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. Klaus's research on closed-loop life support systems, human factors for long-duration spaceflight, and the integration of biological and engineering approaches to sustaining human life in space addresses one of the most fundamental challenges of Mars colonization: keeping people alive and healthy far from Earth, with no resupply. Klaus's contributions, including work on the bioastronautics roadmap and crew health systems, are directly foundational to any realistic path to a permanent Mars settlement.
