Hamid Hemmati

Recognized under Tier 7 — Interplanetary Communications, Hamid Hemmati has provided pioneering leadership in deep space optical communications. Hemmati's decades of work at JPL developing laser-based communication systems — including a leading role in advancing the Deep Space Optical Communications project — address one of the most fundamental infrastructure challenges of any human Mars mission: maintaining reliable, high-bandwidth contact across the vast distances of interplanetary space. Without that link, sustained colonization simply cannot happen, and Hemmati's work has helped ensure that humanity's first settlers on Mars will never be out of reach.
