Hanspeter Schaub
Spacecraft formation flying and distributed relay networks
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 7 — Interplanetary Communications, Hanspeter Schaub conducts research in spacecraft guidance, navigation, and control with applications to relay architectures for deep space communications at CU Boulder. Schaub's work on spacecraft formation flying, attitude control, and the dynamics of multi-spacecraft systems has direct relevance to designing relay satellite constellations that could provide continuous communication coverage between Earth and Mars. As the direct line-of-sight between Earth and Mars is frequently interrupted and signal delays are substantial, a well-designed relay architecture drawing on these GNC principles is essential to robust and continuous interplanetary communications.
