James Longuski
Astrodynamics, interplanetary trajectory design
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 1 — Interplanetary Logistics, James Longuski has built a distinguished career in astrodynamics and trajectory optimization at Purdue University. Longuski's research on gravity-assist trajectories, interplanetary mission design, and Mars cycler orbits — sustained transportation architectures in which spacecraft continuously cycle between Earth and Mars — has made important contributions to the question of how regular, economical transportation between the two planets could eventually be established. The cycler concept is especially relevant to the logistics of supporting a Mars colony, offering a potentially practical means of moving people and cargo between planets without expending fuel to fully decelerate at each destination.
