Human spaceflight systems, EVA, planetary exploration
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 1 — Interplanetary Logistics, Jeff Hoffman has made exceptional contributions to both human spaceflight and Mars mission planning. A veteran NASA astronaut with five Space Shuttle missions — including the first Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission — and a professor at MIT working on Mars mission architecture and life support, Hoffman brings a rare combination of first-hand spaceflight experience and rigorous engineering analysis to the challenge of getting humans to Mars. Hoffman's work on the MOXIE experiment aboard the Perseverance rover, which successfully demonstrated oxygen production from the Martian atmosphere, moved one of the key technologies for Mars missions — in-situ propellant and life support gas production — from theory to demonstrated reality.
