John Brophy

Recognized under Tier 1 — Interplanetary Logistics, John Brophy is a pioneer in electric propulsion and ion engine technology at JPL. Brophy's decades of research and leadership on ion thruster systems — including foundational contributions to the Dawn and Deep Space 1 missions, and work on high-power ion propulsion for deep space applications — have helped establish electric propulsion as one of the most practical and fuel-efficient means of moving spacecraft across interplanetary distances. Cost-effective, reliable propulsion is a fundamental enabler of regular transit for any Mars colonization effort, and the technologies Brophy has helped develop and mature are central to making that possible.
