Water recovery systems, closed-loop life support, ECLSS engineering
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 4 — Life Support & Closed-Loop Systems, Layne Carter has made exceptional contributions to water recovery technology for human spaceflight. As long-time Project Manager and technical lead for the Water Recovery System aboard the International Space Station — a system that recovers approximately 93% of crew water from urine, sweat, and humidity, and represents one of the most advanced closed-loop life support technologies ever deployed in space — Carter has done more than perhaps anyone to demonstrate that sustainable water recycling in a crewed spacecraft is operationally achievable. On a Mars colony, where resupply is infrequent and every kilogram of consumables counts, closing the water loop to the maximum extent possible is an existential requirement, and Carter's work has helped prove it can be done.
