Marco Pavone
Autonomous systems, planetary robotics, motion planning
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 8 — Robotics & Autonomy, Marco Pavone has made outstanding contributions to autonomous robotic systems for space exploration. Pavone's research at Stanford's Autonomous Systems Laboratory — spanning risk-aware motion planning, multi-robot coordination, autonomous spacecraft guidance, and machine learning for planetary mobility — addresses one of the defining challenges of Mars colonization: deploying robotic systems capable of operating safely and effectively across an alien environment with minimal human oversight. The communication delay between Earth and Mars makes true autonomy operationally necessary rather than merely desirable, and the algorithmic and systems-level frameworks Pavone has developed are central to making that possible.
