Mark Shelhamer

Sensorimotor adaptation, human spaceflight resilience, former NASA HRP Chief Scientist

Accomplishments

Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, Mark Shelhamer has made distinguished contributions to sensorimotor adaptation research and provided leadership in the space medicine research community. As a Professor at Johns Hopkins and former Chief Scientist of NASA's Human Research Program — where Shelhamer oversaw the comprehensive scientific effort to understand and mitigate the health risks of long-duration spaceflight, including contributions to the landmark NASA Twin Study — Shelhamer brings both deep research expertise and strategic programmatic experience to the challenge of keeping crews healthy on exploration missions. Current work at the Johns Hopkins Human Spaceflight Lab on resilience, adaptation, and multi-system physiological responses to spaceflight provides the kind of integrative framework Mars mission planners will need to build robust health maintenance systems for colonists living on another planet for years at a time.
