RESEARCHER · TIER 10
Matthew Schaefer
Space commerce law, mining rights, and trade regulation
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 10 — Martian Law & Finance, Matthew Schaefer conducts research in international trade law and space law at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Schaefer's work examining the intersection of international trade regulation and space commerce — including the legal frameworks governing commercial space activities, resource extraction, and the growing private-sector role in space exploration — contributes to the legal architecture that will govern how a Mars colony interacts with Earth-based economies and regulatory systems. As space colonization becomes more commercially driven, the trade law dimensions of that activity will become increasingly important to get right.
