Ruth Globus
Bone and muscle loss countermeasures; long-duration health
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 9 — Extraterrestrial Healthcare, Ruth Globus has made outstanding contributions to space biology and human health in the spaceflight environment. Globus's research at NASA Ames on the effects of microgravity and space radiation on bone, muscle, and other physiological systems — along with work investigating nutritional and pharmaceutical countermeasures, including antioxidant approaches to mitigating radiation damage — addresses two of the most serious and persistent health challenges facing long-duration space travelers. On a Mars mission, where crews will face months of microgravity in transit and chronic radiation exposure both en route and on the surface, the countermeasures this research is helping to develop are essential to keeping colonists healthy enough to do their work.
