Scott Burleigh

Recognized under Tier 7 — Interplanetary Communications, Scott Burleigh has made foundational contributions to delay-tolerant networking and the development of the Bundle Protocol for deep space communications. Over a long career at JPL, Burleigh has worked on the architecture of an interplanetary internet — designing networking protocols capable of operating reliably across the extreme distances, signal delays, and intermittent contact windows of interplanetary space. A Mars colony will depend on robust, standardized communication protocols to relay data, commands, scientific results, and personal messages across hundreds of millions of miles, and the networking framework Burleigh has helped build is what makes that possible.
