RESEARCHER · TIER 10
Steven Freeland
International space law, resource governance, IISL former president
Accomplishments
Recognized under Tier 10 — Martian Law & Finance, Steven Freeland has made exceptional scholarly contributions to international space law and provided global leadership in the space law community. As Emeritus Professor at Western Sydney University, past President of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), and one of the most widely published and internationally respected voices in space law, Freeland has contributed foundational scholarship across the range of legal challenges raised by humanity's expansion into space: resource governance, liability, planetary protection, national space legislation, and the evolving interpretation of the Outer Space Treaty in an era its drafters could not have anticipated. That scholarship will underpin the legal frameworks eventually needed to govern a permanent human presence on Mars.
