Wolfgang Fink

Recognized under Tier 8 — Robotics & Autonomy, Wolfgang Fink conducts innovative research on tiered autonomous robotic systems for planetary exploration. Fink's work at the University of Arizona on hierarchical, multi-asset reconnaissance architectures — in which orbital, aerial, and surface robots collaborate to progressively characterize and explore a planetary surface with minimal human oversight — directly addresses the challenge of surveying and assessing Mars efficiently both before and during colonization. With communication delays making real-time teleoperation impractical, autonomous robotic systems capable of coordinating their own survey activities will be essential scouts and support assets for any Mars settlement.
